Puerto Rico beats Mexico and moves to semi final phase

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 25, 2009 – Puerto Rico downed Mexico in straight sets 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 advancing to the semi final round of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship. The home team now will play against defending champions Cuba on Saturday.

Puerto Rico committed only 14 errors and outscored Mexico 9-2 in blocks and 7-1 in the aces category.

Alexandra Oquendo and Aurea Cruz topped Puerto Rico with 12 and 11 points respectively with Cruz compiling four blocks. Sarai Alvarez contributed 8 tallies. Mexicans Olivia Meza and Cecilia Rios each charted 7 points.

“It was a refreshing victory for us,” said Vilmarie Mojica, the captain of Puerto Rico. “We played at a good level and the reserve players did a good job. Tomorrow we are going hard against Cuba.”

“Cuba is a powerful team and it’s not an easy rival,” said Carlos Cardona, the coach of Puerto Rico. “The expectations are good and we need to control their power and reach.”
